Theme Judaism recognizes that animals have parental feelings toward their young and feel emotional pain when their young are harassed, threatened, or hurt. Inflicting such pain is forbidden.
Maimonides Maimonides, the great Sephardic scholar and physician also known as Rambam, wrote in his famous book "Guide for the Perplexed": "There is no difference between the worry of a human mother and an animal mother for their offspring. A mother's love does not derive from the intellect but from the emotions, in animals just as in humans."
